What is an IBAN?

An IBAN uniquely identifies a bank account across borders. Every IBAN starts with a 2-letter country code, followed by 2 check digits, then the country-specific local account number (BBAN).

How validation works

Vertexa validates every IBAN using the official ISO 7064 MOD-97 algorithm: we move the first 4 characters to the end, convert every letter to two digits (A=10, B=11 … Z=35), then check that the resulting number modulo 97 equals 1. We also check the country-specific length. This is exactly what banks do before accepting an IBAN for a wire transfer.

Frequently asked questions

What is an IBAN?

An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is an internationally agreed system to uniquely identify a bank account across national borders. It can be up to 34 characters long and includes a country code, check digits, and the local bank + account number.

Which countries use IBAN?

IBAN is required across the entire SEPA area (EU + a few extras like Switzerland, Norway, UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein) and adopted by ~80 countries worldwide including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Israel, and Ukraine. The USA, Canada, Australia, China and most of South America do NOT use IBAN.

How do I check if an IBAN is valid?

Enter the full IBAN in the validator above. We run the official ISO 7064 MOD-97 algorithm: rearrange, convert letters A–Z to 10–35, then check that the result mod 97 equals 1. Plus we confirm the length matches the country's registry length.

Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?

No — MOD-97 only confirms the number is mathematically well-formed. Before sending a real transfer, always confirm the IBAN with the recipient or their bank.
